The Scripture
In Matthew 18:21–22, Peter approaches Jesus with what he probably thought was a generous question:
"Lord, how many times shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? Up to seven times?"
Jesus said to him, "I do not say to you, up to seven times, but up to seventy times seven." (NKJV)
Seventy times seven — 490 times. But Jesus wasn't giving Peter a number to count to. He was making a point: forgiveness has no ceiling.
Why 70x7?
In Jewish culture, the number seven represented completeness and perfection. Peter offering to forgive seven times was already going beyond the rabbinical standard of three. But Jesus multiplied it — not to set a new limit, but to shatter the idea of limits altogether.
70x7 is a symbol of radical, unconditional, Christ-like forgiveness. The kind that doesn't keep score. The kind that sets you free as much as it frees the person you're forgiving.
